Regardless of what stage you're at in your journey, there's no denying that technology and social media have had a huge influence on the way educators dress for their everyday job. To position myself, I’m a 21-year-old junior at Rhode Island College who’s been observing high school English classes and will be starting student teaching in a year. I’m pretty active on social media—TikTok, Instagram, and even Facebook (I know, don’t judge!)—so I’m constantly finding new inspiration for pretty much everything, including what to wear for teaching.
One morning, while scrolling through TikTok, I came across a video where a teacher showed off the outfits she wore for teaching that week. Naturally, I ended up down a TikTok rabbit hole, searching for "high school teacher outfits 2024" because, let’s be real, my education professors aren't exactly giving us fashion tips. I clicked on the top-liked video, and the creator was a 7th-grade science teacher. Some of the pieces she wore included jeans, a cardigan, open-toed sandals, a denim dress that was WAY above the knee, an oversized gray cardigan, Adidas Sambas, mid-length socks, dress pants, and a black long-sleeved button-down shirt. These are the kinds of outfits I never would’ve thought of, but they seem practical, stylish, and definitely teachable.
Then I found another creator, a 23-year-old high school health and PE teacher, whose outfits were equally inspiring. She wore sweaters, relaxed jeans, Birkenstock Boston’s clogs , high-rise khakis, sweats, dress pants, and Nike sneakers. What stood out to me was that there were some clear overlaps in the outfits between these two teachers—sneakers, jeans, and sweaters kept popping up as staples. It got me thinking that, when you're looking for fashion advice, it’s helpful to observe multiple people and pay attention to where their styles overlap. That’s where the trends are! These overlapping pieces—sneakers, denim, and cozy sweaters—are all "trending" for this year, if not longer!
Social media is a goldmine for teacher fashion inspiration because it lets you see how different educators are adapting their personal styles for the classroom. Whether it’s TikTok, Instagram, or even Pinterest, social media platforms are full of teachers sharing their outfit ideas, tips for comfort, and how they balance style with the realities of teaching. By following a variety of educators, you can spot what’s trending in the teaching community and find ways to make those trends work for you. And the best part? You can easily get real-time feedback from fellow teachers in the comments or through their content, which makes it so much easier to discover what works in the classroom.
So if you’re looking for a teaching wardrobe inspo (because let’s face it, we all need some), social media is the way to go! You might just find that your next go-to outfit is one you spotted in a TikTok or Instagram post from a fellow educator.
