Trends of the Year

Navigating trendy fashion while maintaining professionalism can be tricky, especially when you’re looking for outfits to wear in a teaching setting. But don’t worry, I’ve done some digging and found some pieces that are showing up most frequently among teachers this year (and this advice goes for all genders, not just the girls!). One trend that keeps popping up is the midi dress. This style, which falls below the knee, is super versatile and can be found in a variety of colors, materials, and sleeve options—long sleeve, sleeveless, or regular shoulder sleeves. Midi dresses are a go-to this year because they hit that sweet spot between professional and comfortable, making them perfect for the classroom. Pair it with a cute flat or a pointy heel (if you're feeling brave that day) and your favorite everyday jewelry, and you’ve got a trendy but classroom-appropriate outfit that will likely meet most dress codes.

Another staple in 2024 teacher wardrobes is dress pants. Many teachers are opting for high-waisted, wide-leg dress pants for that extra comfort factor—because let’s face it, who wants to be stuck in tight pants all day? These pants still give off a professional, polished vibe but feel so much more comfortable, especially when you're teaching. You can find them in various materials, fits, lengths, and colors, so there’s definitely room to mix and match with other pieces. Slim dress pants, particularly for male teachers, have also been trending this year, thanks to their sleek, professional look. These pants pair well with collared shirts, and I was honestly surprised by how many different styles of collared shirts there are! If you’re not into the semi-spread collar, you could try an English spread. The best part? These dress pants and collared shirts are classics that will likely stay in style for years.

If dress pants aren’t your thing, Khakis are another great option that’s been trending among teachers in 2024. They’re versatile and can be paired with any of the collared shirts mentioned above, offering a more relaxed, but still professional, alternative to dress pants. These pieces, whether you go for wide-leg dress pants, slim pants, or khakis, are all trending for the year because they balance style, comfort, and professionalism—everything you need as a teacher.

Classroom-Ready and Stylish: Trendy Shoes for Teachers at Every Stage

It can be extremely difficult to find good pairs of shoes that are both comfortable and stylish, but worry not—I’ve got some great suggestions! Of course, it’s important to always check the dress code for any school you're attending for observations or, if you're already a teacher, the school where you work. Dress codes may vary, and some schools may not be open to all shoe styles. One super trendy shoe I see every day on teachers—and just in general—is loafers . These are the perfect shoes because they are comfortable but also provide that chic look that can elevate any outfit. As a teacher, student teacher, or observer, I personally think that loafers are a necessity. Plus, they’ll pass almost any dress code due to their professional and classic appearance. If you’re looking for another staple that doesn’t scream "I’m obviously TRYING to look fancy today," I suggest a nice pair of boots . I love them because you can get ankle boots , lace up boots , tall boots , e...

Social Media and the Influence it has on Fashion Advice for Educators

Regardless of what stage you're at in your journey, there's no denying that technology and social media have had a huge influence on the way educators dress for their everyday job. To position myself, I’m a 21-year-old junior at Rhode Island College who’s been observing high school English classes and will be starting student teaching in a year. I’m pretty active on social media—TikTok, Instagram, and even Facebook (I know, don’t judge!)—so I’m constantly finding new inspiration for pretty much everything, including what to wear for teaching. One morning, while scrolling through TikTok, I came across a video where a teacher showed off the outfits she wore for teaching that week. Naturally, I ended up down a TikTok rabbit hole, searching for "high school teacher outfits 2024" because, let’s be real, my education professors aren't exactly giving us fashion tips. I clicked on the top-liked video, and the creator was a 7th-grade science teacher. Some of the pieces s...
